"ROBINSON CRUSOE" EXCURSION

One of the many popular trips available from Pinewood in their boat "Kingfisher" is a bird watching trip to the Funzi River, where not only do you get an opportunity to see the coral formations of the coastline, but a unique opportunity to see the many birds lining the banks of the river as you glide lazily along enjoying the sunshine.

This trip allows unto four persons to have an enjoyable day out without the routine of a typical tourist excursion, and much more individual attention can be paid to our guests as they marvel at the beautiful creatures living along the river Funzi.

The Mangrove swamps at the mouth of the Funzi river (a bit like the Everglades in Florida ! ) Mangrove forests are an important, if not critical habitat for a variety of terrestrial and aquatic plants and animals many of which may in turn play an important part in coastal economics.

The terrestrial fauna includes many species of birds, reptiles including crocodiles, mammals (pigs and monkeys) and insects, while the terrestrial flora mainly comprise fungi, lichens and mistletoes. Very large crocodiles are often evident. Frequent marks of buffalo and other large mammals are also commonly found in these mangroves. Other smaller mammals that are known to inhabit mangroves are baboons, duiker, rodents and fruit bats.

The trip will start at about 10am depending on the tides, under the capable hands of Hamisi the captain who has been boating and fishing for Pinewood during the last six years. Hamisi and his ‘mate’ Cassim are extremely good swimmers, in fact they are nicknamed the ‘big fish’.

Once under way, you will be taken with your cook to Chale Island where you will enjoy your own deserted beach, snorkelling in the crystal clear waters and when you hear the ‘jambo’ song being sung you will know it is time to enjoy your picnic lunch cooked the ‘Robinson Crusoe’ way.

After lunch, you can either snooze in the shade or be taken for a small walk around part of the island. You will return at leisure though Hamisi will advise you according to the tides.
This trip is pure escapism!

We also offer a spot of Reef Fishing just in front of Pinewood. Pinewood has two rods available and are free of charge to use.
Alternatively, snorkel or sun bathe on the reef / sand-bank.
PLEASE NOTE THAT HAMISI’S KNOWLEDGE OF THE WATERS AND TIDES ARE UNSURPASSED AND THEREFORE SAFETY IS HIS PRIORITY. HIS DECISION WITH REGARD TO DEPARTING AND RETURNING TO PINEWOOD SHOULD BE RESPECTED AND ADHERED TO.
